History
QUICK TIMELINE:
-1961 the land was purchased by the Swanns.
-1964 the house was completed and the Swanns moved in.
-1971 I was born
-1973 my husband, Alex, was born
-2001 (Dec) Me and the hubs moved into our first home; a 1,100 sq. ft. newly built home in a semi suburban semi rural area. Most of the lots around us have remained wooded, undeveloped, lots.
-2003 Mr. Swann passed away.
-2010 Mrs. Swann moved to assisted living and the house went on the market for the first time.
-2011 (Jan) Alex changes positions within the company and we plan our move to the big city. We began our house search. Quickly discovered we prefer old established neighborhoods and older homes to the newer ones, which we call “soul crushing barren wastelands,” faux expensive, crammed together, and half siding/half brick or stone creations lacking any real character. They’re like the fast food of houses. Yes…we quickly became house snobs.
-2011 (Feb) We made an offer on a 1973 “Brady Bunch” house but the deal fell through because the builder/owner didn’t want to make a few repairs. This lead us to more looking and thankfully to our Carolina Split. It was/is perfect…exactly what we wanted. The house has that magic only a house holding 47 years worth of love and life can inspire…
-2011 (late March/early April) we close on the house. Waiting a flooring issue to be repaired. Other than that, any problems or neglect to the house shows mostly in the gardens and was obviously only left abandoned due to Mrs. Swann’s failing ability to care for it in the past few years. At one time I’m sure it was amazing. Amongst the weeds and ivy are many thriving shrubs like camellias and azaleas.
–March 31, 2011: CLOSED on Carolina Split. It’s officially ours!
We intend to honor the integrity of this cherished home to the best of our ability.
